Establishment:

The department of pediatric surgery established July 2006, in the Sheikh Zayed Medical College/Hospital, Rahim Yar khan. Department of pediatric surgery is one of the busiest units of pediatric surgery in the country. Although still in its nester years, the department fulfils most of the requirements of a model unit. It is well equipped to handle the children of all ages from zero hours to eighteen years of life.

Head Of The Department:

  1. Associate Professor Dr. Jam Mazhar Rafi ( 12-01-2013 to date)
  2. Professor Dr Muhammad Saleem from 01-09-2010 to 10-01-2013.
    The department, headed by Dr Mazhar Rafi, has one Associate Professor Dr Muhammad Zafar Iqbal (MBBS, FCPS (Paeds Surgery), One Senior Registrar Dr Tahir Mehmood, Three registrar Dr. Mushtaq Ahmed and Dr. Syed Asif Shah, Dr. Zahoor Ahmed, Four medical officers and four house officers..

History:

The department started an OPD based service in July 2006. Indoor facilities along with emergency services were started with the collaboration of surgical department. At that time department was working with in surgical departments but having separate OPD and theater. After joining Professor Dr Muhammad Saleem Choudhary in September 2010 as head of Pediatric surgery department, it started as an independent department of 30 beds along with a separate nursery containing four incubaters.This department is now rapidly progressing and expanding under the full guidance and support of Dr. Muhammad Saeed, Principal, Sheikh Zayed Medical College/Hospital, Rahim Yar Khan. Our future plan is to establish the most modern & state of the art Pediatric Surgery unit at Sheikh Zayed Hospital, Rahim Yar Khan.

Facilities:

We are providing neonatal intensive care and pediatric ICU facilities in our department. All patients suffering from congenital anomalies up to 12 year of age are admitted and managed in our department. In addition, there are special areas for the care of post operative cases and high dependency patients. The department provides emergency cover 24 hours a day, to ten million population of southern Punjab as well as extensive areas of the province of the Sindh and Balochistan. There is a wide range of emergency services provided including trauma, neonatal emergencies, elective and emergency services for patients of GIT, urological and respiratory system. Tertiary care assistance is provided to all the hospitals in the city as well as in the catchment’s areas. The department is also providing special services to patients having stomas.

Achievements:

Department of Community Medicine is affiliated with University of Health Sciences Lahore. It has been recognized by Pakistan Medical & Dental Counsel (PMDC) Pakistan and has accreditation with College of Physicians & Surgeons of Pakistan (CPSP). Two classes have passed out with almost 100% results. Three staff members have registered for FCPS and MCPS in this Department. Medical counseling The Department has started the counseling of patients and community to create awareness about health promotion. The guiding and motivating patients and clients is an important function to change and modify attitude & behaviours of the individuals, families and ultimately the communities. Health counseling is receiving special attention in the prevention of acute and chronic diseases for early seeking of treatment and its best compliance.

ICU, And Neonatal ICU:

We have 4 beaded neonatal icu and 8 beaded ICU equipped with central oxygen supply and suction apparatus. There are 4 incubators, one pulse oximeter and one Paediatric ventilator in neonatal icu. Soon it will be upgraded with recent equipment.

Stoma Care Day:

Friday opd is fixed for stoma care. One consultant his team is looking the cases of stomas, either GIT or urinary.
we are providing teaching to the parents to manage the stomas.

Ward:

The thirty bedded ward painted in luxurious colors with the children’s favorite look, provides a friendly environment for the indoor patients. We are also planning for a well baby room having books, television and play land.

Present Working Schedule:

The department provides emergency cover 24 hours a day, seven days a week to a large population of Rahim Yar Khan and its territory. Consultant cover is provided to patients in the outpatient department thrice a week ie, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday for stoma care . Wednesday and Saturday is fixed for elective surgery.

Operations Performed:

It includes all sorts of emergency and elective operations. Commonly performed procedures are Billiary atresia, Choledochal cysts, Hepatic tumours, Congenital diaphragmatic hernia, Eventration of diaphragm, Chest wall deformities like Pectus excavatum, pectus carinatum, intrathoracic tumours. Pulmonary lobectomies, Pneumonectomies, Decortications for Empyemas, Esophageal atresia, Anorectal malformation, Hirschsprung’s disease, Neonatal intestinal surgeries, and Plastic procedures like Labioplasties, Palatoplasties

data of 2011:

Total patients seen during 2011 are 3545. Total patients seen in emergency are 1460.
422 operations were performed in emergency. 617 operations were performed electively during this year

Publications:

The total publications related to the consultants working in the department are 45. Out of which 38 are credited to head of Pediatric Surgery Prof. Dr. Muhammad Saleem

Current Research Projects:

FUTURE VISION:

  • To establish a 60 bedded unit.
  • To upgrade ICU, and Neonatal ICH, with vital sign monitors, pulse oximeter, neonatal ventilators.
  • To develop most modern Endoscopic facilities, like esophagoscope, gastroscope, sigmoidoscope, and colonoscope,., which are in progress, soon we will have these equipments.
  • To develop endoscopic urological facilities, which are also in progress, soon we will have it.
