INTRODUCTION

District Head Quarter (DHQ) Hospital Rahim Yar Khan was established in 1950 and department of cardiology came into existence in 1985. Due to fortunate supervision and generous funding by H.H. Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Alnehan, Head of UAE, a new building was formed and soon this hospital gained the status of being largest DHQ Hospital in Pakistan and it was named as “Sheikh Zayed Medical Complex and DHQ Hospital”. A new complex building, as diagnostic block, Emergency Department and Coronary Care Unit (CCU) was handed over by the H.H. Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan in 1998.

Department of Cardiology was established in 1985 in old DHQ block consisting of 08 bedded CCU and 12 bedded Male and Female wards. The Department of Cardiology was upgraded in 1998 with a new building, comprising of 16 bedded modern CCU, equipped with central monitoring system, central oxygen supply, bedside and central suction units, Ventilators, defibrillators, Temporary pace makers, external pace makers and multi- channel ECG machines.   ETT Quinton 3000 and Echocardiography.

Now it is comprised of total 86 beds with Chest Pain Unit, Coronary Care Unit-I & II, Cardiac ward with 13 beds and non-invasive cardiac diagnostics like ETT, Transthoracic Echo, Stress Echo, Trans esophageal Echo, Peripheral & Carotid Doppler, Holter monitoring and Ambulatory BP monitoring system. It provides Diagnostic and therapeutic facilities to the large population from Rahim Yar Khan District and adjacent areas of South Punjab, Sindh and Baluchistan.

A new block is constructed since 2010 with the facility of 22 beds, cardiac cath lab, cardiac ICU cardiac surgery unit, non-invasive cardiac diagnostics like ETT, Transthoracic Echo, Stress Echo, Trans esophageal Echo, Peripheral & Carotid Doppler multiple channel ECG machines.

In 2020 12 bedded Post Angiography ward was established for OPD Angiography Patients.

In 2022, department is equipped with CT Angiography Machine.

Routine Academic activities like training of PGRs & house physicians, clinico-pathological conferences, and morning meetings are regularly being held. The internet facility is being utilized for updates in the field of cardiology. Continuous research programs are carried out and numbers of research papers have been published in the national and international Journals.

          Department of cardiology is fully accredited with PMDC, CPSP for fcps training and with UHS, LAHORE for MD Cardiology and DIP. Card with

         PMDC from 19-08-2019 to date

         CPSP from 09-06-2011 to date

          UHS from 17-08-2016 to date
