Overview of the Department
The Department of Community Medicine is housed in a newly constructed, modern facility designed to foster academic excellence and professional growth. It includes eight offices, a museum, a seminar room, a library, a health education office, an IT resource center, and other amenities. The department is fully air-conditioned, including its offices, museum, and lecture hall, creating a comfortable and conducive environment for teaching and learning. It caters to students from diverse disciplines such as MBBS, DPT, BSc Allied Health Sciences (MIT, MLT, OTT), and BSc Nursing.
Key Recognitions
- Sheikh Zayed Medical College (SZMC) was recognized by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) in July 2006.
- The Department of Community Medicine received accreditation from the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) in 2009 for postgraduate training programs, including MCPS and FCPS in Community Medicine.
- To date, numerous candidates have successfully completed their FCPS and MCPS training, with several others currently undergoing training.
Core Functions and Contributions
- Knowledge Creation and Publishing
The department is committed to fostering critical thinking and advancing research through several initiatives:
- Journal of Sheikh Zayed Medical College (JSZMC): A nationally and internationally indexed journal co-edited by an associate professor of the department.
- Research Cell: Provides comprehensive guidance on research topics, statistical analysis, and result writing for both students and faculty members.
- Research Integration Program: Seamlessly incorporates research activities into the MBBS curriculum from the first year through to graduation, culminating in publishable research projects.
- Zayedian’s Research Forum (ZRF): Established in 2023, this forum encourages and facilitates research activities while disseminating findings through scientific conferences, meetings, and publications.
- Institutional Review Board (IRB): Established in 2010, the IRB ensures ethical oversight and compliance in all research projects undertaken within the institution.
Health Education and Medical Counseling
The department actively engages in medical counseling to promote preventive healthcare and positive behavioral change within communities. Additionally, it conducts health education programs, focusing on common diseases and preventive measures to enhance public health awareness.
Recognition with PMC (Formerly PM&DC) and CPSP:
Sheikh Zayed Medical College, Rahim Yar Khan was recognized by Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) in July, 2006. Department of Community Medicine, Sheikh Zayed Medical College, Rahim Yar Khan was accrediated by College of Physicians and Surgeons Karachi on January 20th, 2009 on its first visit for Post-Graduations like MCPS and FCPS Community Medicine. There are 04 candidates who have completed FCPS (Community Medicine) training and 08 have completed MCPS (Community Medicine). Two candidates have passed FCPS and two MCPS Community Medicine. Five candidates are under FCPS-II training.
