History and date of ESTABLISHMENT:
The Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences named Mowadat Hussain Rana in 2013 after the legend in the field of Psychiatry, Behavioral Sciences and of Medical Education. It is a full unit having 34 beds comprising of indoor, outdoor, Drug Addiction & Rehabilitation Centre, Psychiatric ICU alongwith the Conference Room for the academic training of undergraduate, postgraduate and the students of Psychology. The department has the facility of ECT and EEG catering the patients six days a week. Drug Addiction & Rehabilitation Centre was inaugurated on 20-02-2020. This is providing facilities to the patients having issues with variant drugs (cannabinoids, opioids, amphetamines, methamphetamines, LSD, intravenous drugs), alcohol, bhang and others. We have state of the art psychiatric ICU and Ketamine Clinic. We are offering a 21-days inpatient detoxification services in the first tier and later, providing rehabilitation services. The department has its own Psychometric Laboratory which has important Psychometric Investigations working under the direct supervision of qualified Clinical Psychologists. The department has its own library which contains the journals of high impact factor alongwith the availability of high standard books on Psychiatry, Psychology, Sociology and Literature. At this time, it is purely an academic, clinical department providing quality Psychiatric services to the people of Southern Punjab and to the people of adjoining areas of Sindh and Baluchistan.
Department of Psychiatry, Sheikh Zayed Medical College/Hospital, Rahim Yar Khan started working in 1988. The Department of Psychiatry received the status of academic department and later in 2005, the subject of Behavioural sciences was added to the curriculum of MBBS and of allied health sciences. From then onward the name of department is changed to “The Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences” and it is serving as basic sciences as well as an academic clinical department.

- OPD services are available 6 days a week.
- Inpatient Facilities
- 34 beds are available, distributed as follows:
- 10 beds for females
- 12 beds for males
- 10 beds for the Drug Addiction Centre

- Drug addiction cases are managed within limited resources.
- Drug Addiction Centre has 10 dedicated beds.
- Diagnostic and Therapeutic Services
- EEG Room: EEG tests are conducted for both indoor and outdoor referred cases.
- Psychometric Lab: Various psychological tests are performed, including PANSS, MMPI, TAT, BGT, HFD, BDI, WAT, EPPS, RISB, and RSPM.
- ECT Services: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is performed in collaboration with the Anesthesia Department and the Emergency Operation Theatre.
- General Laboratory Tests, CT Scan, and MRI: Conducted in liaison with hospital labs.
- Ketamine Clinic: Recently started and now functional.
- Emergency and Ward Services
- 24/7 Emergency Services: Round-the-clock emergency care is provided for psychiatric patients.
- Doctor Availability: One doctor is always present in the ward.
- Forensic Psychiatry
- Forensic psychiatry services are provided in collaboration with the District Police, Jail, and Judiciary.
- Psychological Profiling: Facilitated for firearm license applicants.

- Three psychologists of our department have also been enrolled for PHD in counselling and guidance.

- The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is actively engaged in the teaching of Behavioral Sciences and PERLs, aligning with the latest integrated curricular syllabus as per the updated guidelines of the University of Health Sciences (UHS), Lahore.
- 3rd Year Mbbs:
In this session (2021-2022) teaching in the subject of Behavioural Sciences and Psychiatric illness is being deliver to 3rd year MBBS class as following schedule:

FUTURE PLANS:
- Mou has been signed between Psychiatry department Rahim Yar Khan and IUB BWP. We are aiming to start a six month certification course of forensic psychiatry.
- There are several research projects are ongoing in the department of psychiatry as mentioned below. However, we have future plans of stentings our research area further more.
- Prevalence of Depression among the patients having Ischemic Heart Diseases (IHD) presented to Department of Cardiology, Sheikh Zayed Hospital, Rahim Yar Khan by Dr Sarmad Mushtaq, Dr Ali Burhan Mustafa.
- Prevalence of Depression among patients having Type II Diabetes Mellitus by Dr Abdul Basit, Dr Ali Burhan Mustafa.
- Genetics Study on Schizophrenic patients by Dr. Ali Burhan Mustafa, Miss Bisma Jameel, Mr. Shafaqat Ali bhatti
- Genetics Study on Bipolar Affective Disorder patients.
- It is increasingly recognized that some specific areas of Mental Health Care as well as patients of specific age groups have different needs for care.
