Histroy and date of ESTABLISHMENT:
The Department of Psychiatry & Behavioural Sciences named Mowadat Hussain Rana in 2013 after the legend in the field of Psychiatry, Behavioural Sciences and of Medical Education. It is a full unit having 40 beds comprising of indoor, outdoor, Drug Addiction & Rehabilitation Centre, Psychiatric ICU alongwith the Conference Room for the academic training of undergraduate, postgraduate and the students of Psychology. The department has the facility of ECT and EEG catering the patients six days a week. Drug Addiction & Rehabilitation Centre was inaugurated on 20-02-2020. This is providing facilities to the patients having issues with variant drugs (cannabinoids, opioids, amphetamines, methamphetamines, LSD, intravenous drugs), alcohol, bhang and others. We have state of the art psychiatric ICU and Ketamine Clinic. We are offering a 21-days inpatient detoxification services in the first tier and later, providing rehabilitation services. The department has its own Psychometric Laboratory which has important Psychometric Investigations working under the direct supervision of qualified Clinical Psychologists. The department has its own library which contains the journals of high impact factor alongwith the availability of high standard books on Psychiatry, Psychology, Sociology and Literature. At this time, it is purely an academic, clinical department providing quality Psychiatric services to the people of Southern Punjab and to the people of adjoining areas of Sindh and Baluchistan.
Department of Psychiatry, Sheikh Zayed Medical College/Hospital, Rahim Yar Khan started working in 1988. The Department of Psychiatry received the status of academic department and later in 2005, the subject of Behavioural sciences was added to the curriculum of MBBS and of allied health sciences. From then onward the name of department is changed to “The Department of Psychiatry & Behavioural Sciences” and it is serving as basic sciences as well as an academic clinical department.

FACILITIES
The department of psychiatry is a single unit under one roof. We have 34 beds (10 females, 12 males, 10 Drug Addiction Centre, 02 Psychiatric ICU). We also have an EEG room where we do EEG tests for indoor and outdoor referred cases. There is a psychometric lab in which various psychological tests are performed (like PANSS, MMPI, TAT, BGT, HFD, BDI, WAT, EPPS, RISB, RSPM). We do ECT in collaboration with anaesthesia department and emergency operation theatre. We also manage cases of drug addiction within limited resources. All general laboratory tests, CT scan and MRI are done in liaison with hospital labs. We provide 24 hours’ emergency services for the patients of Psychiatry.one doctor is always present in ward We have liaison with department of medicine, surgery, paediatrics, Gynea & obs and all other departments of hospital. We also provide facilities of forensic psychiatry under the collaboration of District Police, Jail and judiciary. We run OPD for 6 days per week. We have facility of online data of indoor patients. CCTV Cameras and security system of Psychiatry ward is outstanding. Pharmacy is also present in psychiatry department. Ketamine Clinic has been started and functional.
Prison Psychiatry Service: We are currently liaising with this he local district goal to establish a prison psychiatry service with regular input from our team. There are many deficits in this area and we currently have no secure facilities for treating patients with criminal charges properly either in our service or in the prison. Similarly facilities for rehabilitation of drug abuse, adult and child psychiatry, learning disability and forensic psychiatric patients are vital needs which can possibly be met only in the community either through a liaison service or a public private partnership in the community.
ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS:
- Five Residents for FCPS (Psychiatry) and one for MCPS (Psychiatry) registered.
- Three psychologists of our department have also been enrolled for PHD in counselling and guidance.
TRAININGS/ INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS:
- Many batches of MSc psychology students have completed their internship in the department of Psychiatry under the supervision Dr. Ali Burhan Mustafa.
- Mini workshops about psychiatric disorders and drug addiction with doctors of other departments and periphery held on different occasions.

- One grand review round per week.

FUTURE PLANS:
- Mou has been signed between Psychiatry department Rahim Yar Khan and IUB BWP. We are aiming to start a six month certification course of forensic psychiatry.
- There are several research projects are ongoing in the department of psychiatry as mentioned below. However, we have future plans of stentings our research area further more.
- Prevalence of Depression among the patients having Ischemic Heart Diseases (IHD) presented to Department of Cardiology, Sheikh Zayed Hospital, Rahim Yar Khan by Dr Sarmad Mushtaq, Dr Ali Burhan Mustafa.
- Prevalence of Depression among patients having Type II Diabetes Mellitus by Dr Abdul Basit, Dr Ali Burhan Mustafa.
- Genetics Study on Schizophrenic patients by Dr. Ali Burhan Mustafa, Miss Bisma Jameel, Mr. Shafaqat Ali bhatti
- Genetics Study on Bipolar Affective Disorder patients.
- It is increasingly recognized that some specific areas of Mental Health Care as well as patients of specific age groups have different needs for care.
