BRIEF HISTORY AND ESTABLISHMENT OF THE DEPARTMENT.
Department of Dermatology is a relatively new offshoot of the historic institution presently known as Sheikh Zayed Hospital, Rahim Yar Khan, which started as a civil hospital in 1928 and later was upgraded to DHQ Hospital in 1952. With the efforts of Government of the Punjab and the generous financial support by his Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al-Nahyan, Ruler of Abu Dhabi, it grew tremendously in bed strength as well as in available facilities. This hospital which started as a 50 bedded civil hospital, now has 1360 beds and serving as a teaching hospital affiliated with Sheikh Zayed Medical College, Rahim Yar Khan since March 2003. It serves a population of about 6 million, residing in District Rahim Yar Khan, and adjoining areas of Bahawalpur, Rajanpur Districts and Sindh and Balochistan Provinces.
Department of Dermatology started from scratch as outpatient clinic in 2003. Prior to this, patients with skin diseases were attended by Medical Specialist. With establishment of Sheikh Zayed Medical College, many new specialties emerged, dermatology being one of them. Dermatology Department, an integral part of the college was established on 09/01/2007 in the Sheikh Zayed Medical College/Hospital Complex, Rahim Yar Khan.
The unit got sanctioned posts of Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor and Senior Registrar. In October, 2008, dermatology in-patient came into existence when ten beds were allocated in the then psychiatry ward. Today dermatology department has its own indoor female and male wards with total strength of 20 beds. Teaching faculty consists of, Two Assistant Professor and Two Senior Registrar. There are One SWMO and Ten MOs, Seven PGR’s and One House Officer.
At present, Department of Dermatology is actively providing healthcare and dedicated indoor services to an estimated population of over 6 million from districts of Rahim Yar Khan, Bahawalpur, Rajanpur and adjacent areas of Sindh and Balochistan. Daily OPD attendance ranges from 450 – 500 patients. 30-45 patients are admitted monthly. It is equipped with electro-cautery and other therapeutic equipment. Pipeline plans include establishment of more space for diagnostic and therapeutic equipment like phototherapy, laser therapy, patch testing, dermato-surgery theatre, library and departmental laboratory etc.
Undergraduate medical teaching in the department follows the guidelines provided by UHS. The department is actively involved in teaching and clinical training of undergraduate students. In April 2010, College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan accredited the department for training of postgraduate students of MCPS and FCPS in the subject of Dermatology which provides an opportunity to the local doctors to start their career in dermatology and ultimately deliver specialist healthcare to local community. More than thirty main and rotational trainees have since been trained. Among them 04 FCPS trainees and 01 MCPS trainee has cleared the examination and now serving in different areas as dermatologist. At present, there are 05 FCPS and 01 MCPS trainees are getting training in the department.
To strengthen continued medical education for doctors and for patients welfare, various scientific studies are underway. Major latest textbooks are also available here and online journals are also available. In future, every effort will be done for the welfare of the patients and medical education In Sha Allah.
Recognition OF DERMATOLOGY DEPARTMENT WITH PMDC & CPSP
Dermatology Department, Sheikh Zayed Medical College, Rahim Yar Khan has been recognized by the Pakistan Medical & Dental Council Since May, 2007. Department has also been accredited by College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan for MCPS / FCPS-II training programmer since April 2010. Since then both MCPS / FCPS training programs are being conducted.

- Cautry, fulguration, chemical peeling and PRP for different skin problems.
- Scraping for fungus, skin biopsy procedures for diagnostic purpose.
- Department’s own library and conference hall is established.
