In the modern era the needs of an information technology department is very necessary in all fields of life. Considering the importance and needs to meet modern standards, the Principal of the Sheikh Zayed Medical College/Hospital, Rahim Yar Khan Professor Dr. Eice Muhammadat that time identified the needs and importance of an I.T department which due to his sincere efforts was established in the community medicine department as a computer lab, which was inaugurated by D.C.O named Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah on 29th March, 2008. From the inception of this idea, till its completion, this project was worked out by utilizing every sort of professional and technical assistance at its every stage to make it comfortable, more equipped and meeting all modern needs which may be helpful for its users. The basic fact and objective behind this project was to equip our students of medical sciences with the rapid advancement and discoveries in the fields of science and technology. For this purpose by utilizing our best budgeting capacity this lab has been established, which consists of sixteen computers, Printer, Scanner and two heavy duty UPS(s), etc.
Inauguration Computer Lab
For the users of this lab, an instructor and computer programmer has been appointed to assist the users in all respects for their concerns. The appointed instructor not only assists them but also trains them for the effective use of this technology.
In 2010, due to increasing traffic, the management identified the need of another lab to meet the demand of its users. For this purpose the worthy Principal at that time Professor Dr. Muhammad Saeed, established another lab which was inaugurated by the honorable Vice Chancellor of the University of Health Sciences Professor Malik Hussain Mubbashar on 23rd March, 2010.
CPSP Workshop
These labs were supervised by Assistant Professor Community Medicine the (Late) Dr. Muhammad Sharif Akhter with the help of technical team members (Muhammad Akmal manzoor, Muhammad Farhan Saeed, Muhammad Naeem, Muhammad Imran, Muhammad Zubair, Syed Asif Shah). He played a vital role in running these labs properly and effectively. He provided his best services and showed its benefits to the doctors as well as students. He arranged many CPSP workshops for the first time in this institute. These labs resulted in great benefits to the students of this institution.
Establishment of Department
It was the earnest wish of the worthy Principal Prof. Dr. Muhammad Saeed that sheikh Zayed Medical College/Hospital may develop and prove its identity like the institutes of developed countries. Hence, in order to materialize his dream and to achieve his noble aims, he worked day in and day out. As a result of such efforts, I.T department eventually got established with a team of volunteers working in different departments of this institution on 2nd September 2011. Later the management of this department was handed to Professor Major (R) Dr. Malik Muhammad Hanif, who initiated his work by establishing a highly qualified team.

PATIENT CARD SYSTEM
Patient card system is our newly developed system. This is a real step forward for paper free environment. According to the scenario every patient is issued a system generated card which contains patient’s basic information his Medical Record No. / Patient Id, a barcode etc. This card is valid for life now on every visit patient doesn’t need to wait in long queues for their visit confirmation. On each visit the need is to just have scanned Patient’s card by a barcode reader and Patient’s visit will be generated. It will speed up the process. It is also beneficial for doctors as they can patients all visits from first to last and their reports on checkup system after this detail patient history it will help them to diagnose patients.
WEB DEVELOPMENT
This era is era of technology and in the technology the most important field is web/online. The Web Section of Information Technology Department is backbone for any organization. Through the web we can introduce our organization world widely and include to social community, which makes people easy to understand, communicate and locate the organization. And the website makes it very easy for people to find, read up about SZMC, what SZMC do and answer a bunch of questions they have on SZMC. It’s clear that if you don’t have a website, you’re missing out on opportunities for customers to identify who you are. The website of Sheikh Zayed Medical College/ Hospital Rahim Yar Khan is running since August 2008.

- ACHIEVEMENTS OF I.T DEPARTMENT
It is great honor for I.T Department that Sheikh Zayed Medical College/Hospital is the only teaching hospital in southern Punjab where in house developed Hospital Information Management System (HIMS) is running successfully.
HIMS (Hospital Information Management System) project engagement of the IT departments and other significant work in various fields like web development, establishment of Hardware & network infrastructure and client services. The Institute has its own website (www.szmc.edu.pk) and the website has all the facilities for the Medical Students and staff as well as is updated on daily basis. The Information Technology department provides students, faculty, and staff with technology resources that support teaching, research, and services. These services include computer and network support, high performance of teaching skills.
- GOALS OF HOSPITAL INFORMATION MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (HIMS)
Goal of Hospital Information management System (HIMS) is supporting hospital activities in the levels of practical, Tactical, and strategic .In other words, goal of hospital information management system (HIMS) is using of computers and communications equipment for collecting, storing, processing, readout, and communication between patients cares with administrative data on all hospital activities and comply needs of all consumers system .In academic hospitals, also research and training support is one of the hospital information management system (HIMS) goals. Generally the main goals hospital information management system (HIMS) can be summarized in the following:
Improving staff efficiency
- To remove duplication and unnecessary procedures
- Using computers as work tools
- Statistics and data mining techniques faster and more accurate
- Improving quality of health care status of
- To create a modern working methods and systems and standardized hospital
- Data communication systems, medical engineering
- Generation of alert and Reminds: HIMS systems help with the creation of Wake series warning messages to remind doctor in diagnosis. For example, patient has an abdominal pain that is may be 45 diseases that have the same symptoms but doctor remembers only 10 of them.
- Critical Pathway of Decisions: HIMS systems help a doctor in serious cases. In very serious cases, that there isn’t the opportunity for doctor to decide, these systems help the doctor and bring HIMS response quickly in emergency cases.
- Automatic reporting: one of advantages and performances of HIMS systems is that can be provided report of patient’s diagnostic – care information automatically by them.
- Reduce cost: HIMS systems effect very significant in reducing the costs. So if you have detection algorithms in the system, you won’t need to review Problem Oriented of patient. In this case you won’t require performing additional tests and etc.
- Access to diagnostic information – care of patient with a PC: using of the appropriate Work station, physician can access patients and hospitals easily from your location or where he/she is present.
- Suitable Administration: One of the benefits of HIMS systems is that allow the patient to call the hospital network from home and reserve time to meet with the doctor. Thus make an Appointment is much easier.
- Reducing errors: because all data have been collected in one place, fewer mistakes occur.
- Better Managing & Following: patient management and follow patient can be done better in these systems. Therefore, accessing to previous information of patient will be better.
- Data Presentation T-standardization, better communication of information and decrease the time.

The said project was first of all designed, developed and deployed at H.H Sheikh Khalifa Health Care Center which is still working efficiently. I.T took step to provide the Institute a paper free environment by integrating HIMS modalities.

Before the implementation of automated system in sugar clinic the distribution of insulin was an issue because of manual system. Now automated system made every patient possible to get insulin on computerized insulin card. Record of every patient is stored in computer and it is made sure that every patient gets the allowed number of insulin per month. Insulin cards are issued on patient’s CNIC number and single CNIC can only have one card. The system also provides daily monthly and yearly reports of insulin and this is made sure that the distribution of insulin is fair.
- HIMS AT HEPATITIS CLINIC DEPARTMENT
PCR test is very important for hepatitis patients, only limited number of investigations can be performed per day in hospital. Hepatitis Clinic was facing a problem that most patients repeat their test before the recommended time and because of that actual patient suffered. After the implementation of automated system now hepatitis clinic have all the record of patients whom PCR investigation been already done. PCR record is searched out on patients CNIC and only needed patients are referred for PCR.
- HIMS AT CTC (Center of Thalassemia Care) DEPARTMENT
Thalassemia patients have lifelong visits at Center of Thalassemia Care. CTC keep a File for every patient according Patient reports and relevant data. It was very difficult to handle these file for years as they occupy a lot of space and it was very hard to analyze patients those Files. After the implementation of system this task has become much easier. The hard files are now entered in CTC Management system and integrated with online reports. Now a doctor can analyze patient’s year’s record on one screen and can view detail summery on patients that have increased their efficiency and it helps doctors to have batter understanding on their patients’ health.
- PATHOLOGY & INDOOR/OUTDOOR DEPARTMENTS
Before the implementation of Pathology Software modules, there was no facility of collection & test result data entry and reporting on same platform. Patient suffered because section wise reports collected manually and placed at reporting counter. The reporting counter personal had to search from reports by each section manually and patient had to wait, that was time consuming activity and patient suffers.

- COMPLAINT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Hardware & Network Section has launched a Complaint Management System to register the complaints of the SZMC Staff for Troubleshooting and process to solve them accordingly.
HDS (Help Desk System) has been developed by IT-Team to facilitate SZMC staff Members. SZMC Staff Member can register complain online and can see its status as well. IT staff will look after registered complains and solve accordingly.
- BIOMETRIC ATTENDANCE SYSTEM
A Biometric Attendance Machine is installed in Emergency Department as a pilot project. Total 300 Plus users registered to mark the day to day attendance in the system. Users are marking the attendance by Face Recognition & Finger Print method as per their choice. IT Department extracting.
