Physiotherapy Department was established in 1988. Sheikh Zayed Hospital’s Physiotherapy Department excels in clinical care as well as the academic field of rehabilitation. With the tireless efforts of pioneer leaders, we successfully started the 5-year DOCTOR OF PHYSICAL THERAPY program in 2011 at H.H. Sheikh Khalifa Institute of Allied Health Sciences.

The department provides extensive inpatient and outpatient clinical services.
These include:
- Pain Management:
Our physiotherapists working in the pain management services specialize in helping people manage their pain better. Our main aim is to improve quality of life and help people function despite the pain.
- Neuro and Spinal Rehabilitation:
This includes care for patients with neurological (nerve/nervous system) injuries or illnesses. Individuals who may benefit include those who have suffered a stroke, experienced a head injury or spinal cord injury. A team of specially trained therapists work diligently to provide exceptional and individualized care.
- Pulmonary Rehabilitation:
Pulmonary rehabilitation is a multidisciplinary, comprehensive intervention for patients with chronic lung disorders who are symptomatic and have a reduced ability to perform daily activities.
This multidisciplinary outpatient and indoor patient programme collaborate with the rest of the rehabilitation team to improve peripheral muscle strength and endurance, functional exercise capacity, dyspnea, and health-related quality of life.
- Musculoskeletal rehabilitation:
Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy is a specialized domain of treating injuries and conditions which affect the muscles, joints and soft tissues. Injuries which can be treated include:
- Ligament sprains
- Muscle strains
- Arthritis or joints pain
- Cartilage tears
- Pre and post-surgery rehabilitation
- Fracture rehabilitation
- Back pain
These injuries may require a musculoskeletal physiotherapy assessment and treatment session to optimize healing and speed the recovery process. Upon assessment, our physiotherapist will work with the patient to set the goals and develop an appropriate rehabilitation plan.
Pediatric rehabilitation at the department is designed to improve the abilities of children following a major injury, illness or medical procedures. This individualized program has been formulated to achieve specific goals in three core areas: mobility, self-care and communication. Our comprehensive and interdisciplinary rehabilitation program is adapted to the child’s development needs. These services are also provided at Pediatric wards for indoor patients.
- Intensive & Respiratory Care:
Physiotherapists are an integral part of the multi-disciplinary team in ICU, HDU and CCU where physical therapy services are provided as per need of the patient with all the dedication and efforts.
- Cardiac Rehabilitation:
Patients who have had a heart attack, angina, heart failure, bypass surgery, valve surgery, or angiography can benefit from cardiac rehabilitation. Our Cardiac team has extensive expertise and training in pre- and post-operative cardiac care.
- Sports Rehabilitation:
Our Sports rehabilitation programme is concerned mainly with patients who have suffered injuries and are experiencing pain, or who would like to improve their performance. Sports rehabilitation includes muscle strength testing, specific joint testing, a total body flexibility evaluation and injury prevention consultation.
Physiotherapist treats patients after hand trauma or hand surgery. Provides exercises advice and educate scar management as large part of hand rehabilitation.
- Women Health:
- Gynecological Rehabilitation
The purpose of such rehabilitation is to treat the consequences of gynecological surgery as early as possible, in order to help prevent development of chronic problems. - Exercise for fitness and obesity
Our experienced and educated therapists guide fitness and aerobic training to help our patients manage weight and get healthy.
- Geriatric Physiotherapy:
Geriatric Physiotherapy covers wide area of issues concerning older adults. There are many conditions that effect many people as they grow older.
- Apart from that, the physiotherapy department is fully equipped with all of the required electrotherapeutic modalities and exercise equipment to provide a variety of services to patients.
